commu n i t y l i fe JANUARY- F E B R UARY 2 0 1 5 45 “ “copa ca bana” HELP CHILDREN WIHT SPECIAL NEEDS AT PARENCSTAN GALA Jim and Vicky Asbury, honorary chairs and longtime supporters of children’s causes, invite you to “Come to the Copacabana,” the 9th Annual ParentsCAN Gala on Saturday, February 21, 2015 Come to the Copacabana” will feature the nightclub life, glamour and Latin music of the legendary Copacabana. The event offers a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception, followed by dinner paired with Napa Valley wines, a live and silent auction, and dancing to music by the Grove Valve Orchestra. The gala raises money to enable ParentsCAN to serve more than 1,100 children with special needs and their families every year. Marlena Garcia, Executive Director of ParentsCAN, explains, “Every child deserves to be loved and accepted as they are, to grow up healthy and to be educated to achieve their full potential. “But children with special needs depend on a complicated array of health care providers, institutions and programs to get the best possible care and reach their maximum potential. Unfortunately, the needs of many of these children are not being met.” ParentsCAN provides families with individualized support to meet their unique needs. This can be anything from providing emotional support, supplying information about their child’s special need, helping them access therapies, assisting them with school issues including Individual Education Plans to helping them find appropriate housing. The group recently helped a family whose child was born with brittle bone disease, a congenital disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. The parents were devastated and worried that they would not be able to care for the baby. The child’s mother recently wrote ParentsCAN, “Just talking with the advocates at ParentsCAN made us feel that we were not alone. Our advocate connected us with essential services for our son. My older children got involved with Sibshops, your support group for siblings. Our whole family is stronger because of you.
