The group had been playing together for fun when they were asked to perform at Auction Napa Valley’s Barrel Auction at Coppola, and then the Staglin Music Festival with Leon Russell. “We didn’t even have a name when we agreed to perform at these events,” said lead singer Shane Solinger, “so we decided to call ourselves The Silverado Pickups. There are a lot of incredible musicians in this valley who work in the wine industry, so it was natural to bring some of us together.” Of the band’s co-founders, David Duncan of Silver Oak Cellars also sings, and Jeff Gargiulo of Gargiulo Vineyards plays guitar. Dan Zepponi, photo by KARI RUEL Valley of the Moon and son of the co-founder of ZD Wines, plays guitar. The bass player is Bialle Winemaker Tres Goettings. Paul Hoffman, who does finances for many vineyards, plays keyboard. All the band members agree they have one of the best drummers and percussionists in the San Francisco Bay Area in Joe Shotwell of 55-Degrees Wine. “The band started out as our version of poker night,” said Duncan. “It’s an honor to play with these musicians.” “We all have unique skill sets and backgrounds with a foundation in music,” said Gargiulo. “Of course, rehearsals include wine.” The band focuses on performing at charitable events and often turns down paying gigs. They traveled to Nashville a year ago and released their original, “Wine Country Cowboy,” available on iTunes. –Kari Ruel JANUARY / F E B R UARY 2 0 1 5 19
