Miss Leona Shapiro was 23 years old in 1961 when she entered Flowing Wells High School in the then-small city of Tucson, Arizona. Her first teaching assignment was Natural Science and Biology. She had always loved science and was eager to share the fascinating world of animals, plants and minerals with her students. Leona’s beauty and easy- going manner captured the attention of many of her students and colleagues, but one sophomore boy in particular, Carl Rice, was smitten. He had a crush on his teacher.
