Napa Valley’s Hestan Vineyards shot to prominence in 2004 with the inaugural release of its flagship Hestan Cabernet Sauvignon, which received 95 points from wine critic Robert Parker, who lauded it as “Very impressive…full-bodied, opulent, pure, and expansive.” Hestan Vineyards is owned by Stanley and Helen Cheng, who purchased a 127-acre cattle ranch on the eastern slopes of Napa Valley in 1996 with the goal of growing world-class grapes. Over the course of several years they cultivated the rolling hills that encircle the estate’s 11-acre lake, taking advantage of the site’s diversity to plant small blocks of the five principal red Bordeaux varieties. Following the success of their Hestan Cabernet, the Chengs released two more labels from their estate vineyards, including Meyer, a second Cabernet Sauvignon label named for Stanley Cheng’s global cookware company, and Stephanie, a line of Bordeaux-style wines named for their daughter. Hestan also produces a Chardonnay from grapes planted at a tiny 2 1/2-acre vineyard the Chengs planted at the mouth of the Napa River, in the San Francisco Bay appellation.
