JANUARY / F E B R UARY 2 0 1 4 41 like an insane choice with kids, but the great thing about white is that you can bleach it. The sofa is made from a hearty denim fabric that can be easily cleaned. Moving on to the next room, where all the cleaning takes place, it’s technically not a room at all. Working with the limited space, Patricia and her architect, Daniel Hale, carved out a niche in the hallway for laundry. This compact space embraces the European sensibility of utilizing a small area to the maximum. For starters, its location is practical, as it’s positioned upstairs where most of the laundry is generated. A big believer in lifting up workspaces, Patricia raised the washer and dryer up from the floor for easier access. Continuing to make the most of space, the drying rack is located overhead on a pulley system – an old English mechanism of drying which was typically used in kitchens, where it was the warmest. Now you can find this system at IKEA. Exposed shelves give dimension to the small space, and laundry becomes a thing of beauty with French laundry baskets and glass apothecary jars to hold detergents. When you want it all to disappear, a large barn door slides across to mask the space. Throughout the home Patricia has transformed the everyday functional into aesthetically beautiful. It’s a place that, even in the midst of chaos, embodies a sense of serenity and calm. And for a busy family, that’s saying a lot!
