The California Retired Teachers Association CalTRA Division 58 Providing More Opportunity These are the scholarship recipients from the California Retired Teachers who worked very hard to give 28 students $1500.00 scholarships. These distinguished West Contra Costa students will be attending colleges locally as well as all over the USA. The retired teachers are very proud of this group of high school seniors whom are ready to conquer the world of college. Some of the recent contributions are: Division #58 of the California Retired Teachers Association is 600 members strong and supports the scholarship fund with numerous fundraising activities throughout the year. (Nancy Gutierrez, Middle College) Patricia Rupley served the district for many years as a teacher, counselor, principal, and central office administrator. Her lasting legacy was her unyielding commitment to making the schools responsive to ever-changing needs of the students. Joan Binalingbing, Kennedy High School) Richmond Association of School Administrators (RASA) is the local chapter of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). One of the goals of the organization is to support scholarships for graduating seniors. (Ejhane’ Lyons, Middle College) Atsuko (Sue) Yusa studied at San Francisco State before being interned at Tanforan and then Poston. After World War II, she graduated from UC Berkeley and taught for over 29 years in the Richmond Unified School District. She continues to help students by providing a scholarship from her estate. (Maggie Li, El Cerrito High School) 62 MARKETPLACEcontrac osta .com september 2015 James W. Kelly remembered the WCCRE Scholarship Fund with an annual contribution from his trust fund. (Andrea Hernandez, Richmond High School) Joanna Sykes was a dedicated WCCUSD teacher for 40 years, most of it at Sheldon Elementary School where she happily taught kindergarten. An inspiring teacher beloved by students and parents, Joanna brought joy and love for learning directly into the classroom and continues her support with a scholarship. (Tamajiea Videau, DeAnza High School) Scott Honey, Pinole Valley graduate and former WCCRES Fund scholarship recipient has provided a scholarship in appreciation of the kindness of teachers and staff members through his 20 years of public education. (Luis Castro, Pinole Valley High School) Mechanics Bank is Richmond’s hometown bank and continues its community support by providing a scholarship for a graduating senior through the WCCRE scholarship fund. (Mani Subhiksha, Hercules High School) Dorothie Stillwell was a special education teacher and artist. Her husband, Russell Stillwell, an area educator and professor at Contra Costa College, has left a scholarship in her name. (Rudy Moran, Vista High School) David Shank was a dedicated district teacher. He spent his entire career at Helms Middle School where he was a well-liked Industrial Arts and Math teacher. His support of stu-dents lives on with a generous donation to the WCCRE scholarship fund. (Crystal Viramontes Tse, DeAnza High School.) Thank you for the support of these deserving students!
