OCTOBER 13: EL CERRITO GARDEN CLUB’S SIGN DISCUSSION 9:30am. If you have ever seen the El Cerrito Garden Club’s sign in someone’s front yard, it is probably because they won one of three Sundar Shadi awards given each year to recognize outstanding residential gardens in El Cerrito. This year’s contest was themed “Creative Responses to Drought.” The club’s October program will feature the three 2016 award winners. El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane in El Cerrito. Members are free, and visitors cost $3 each. 510 237 4654. OCTOBER 14: CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT 11:30am-2pm. Come and join the Contra Costa College Ceramics and Culinary Arts students and their instructors who are hosting an Empty Bowls Event to help feed the hungry. The event will take place in the beautiful new Aqua Terra Grill, SAB130. Delicious soups prepared by the Culinary Arts students will be served in beautiful hand-made ceramic bowls created by ceramics students and volunteers. Guests select the bowl(s) of their choice and keep them as a reminder of all the empty bowls needing to be filled in our local Bay Area and around the world. Bowls may be purchased at the event for $10 each. Contra Costa College students receive a $5 discount on their first bowl. Kids and middle schoolers spend a wonderful 15 minutes reading to a dog. Certified therapy dogs, READ trained, will listen to children read. Sessions with these special dogs are about 15 minutes each. The HALO dogs provide a nurturing acceptance and a warm empathy that makes children feel safe, providing a nonjudgmental space for learning. Registration is suggested.
