The serious side entails learning their ritual and practicing their values of living a clean and moral life. The fun side entails activities like going to Great America, going river rafting, visiting other chapters, mingling with the sister organizations, and much more. “I was a DeMolay and I’m still active,” said Rounds. “If I’m still active after 50 years, I must think it’s a pretty great organization.” Ritual is what makes DeMolay most unique, according to Rounds. Every meeting they adhere to their ritual books, speaking words from memory, and conduct their meetings following Robert’s Rules of Order. By memorizing the ritual, members are required to begin honing public speaking skills from a very early age. “You learn to get up and speak before people without being afraid,” said Rounds. And this is a very unique aspect as not many organizations help you learn that skill, which is notoriously everyone’s biggest fear on earth. “Without that ritual, DeMolay would be just like any other organization.” DeMolay doesn’t accept just anybody and there is a brief vetting process, but as your child will be joining a real-life brotherhood, it’s important to properly introduce oneself. The only prerequisite to be considered a member is to have a belief in a higher power, though they preach no particular religious creed. You also must be within the ages of 12-21. So if your son has yet to find his niche in organized sports, school clubs, boy scouts, what have you, perhaps DeMolay is worth looking into! Rounds invites you to attend one of their meetings. They meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Richmond Masonic Hall, 5050 El Portal Dr., El Sobrante.
