Both fixed-tilt and single-axis tracking panels will be installed on the land. They’ll all be thinfilm, non-toxic panels, manufactured in the United States. Construction for the project will likely start this November, set to be completed one year later. Throughout the construction MCE and RichmondBUILD expect to create approximately 80 jobs, and employees will be paid a prevailing wage, whether they’re a member of a union or not. A key aspect of this project is not just the renewable energy it is set to provide, but the use of the capped landfill itself. “You can’t build a home on it, you can’t plant trees on it, it’s not going to be open space for the public, it’s not a sensitive wildlife or ecological area,” DiGiorgio explains. “The best possible use of this space is to generate renewable energy on it.” Deep Green is a 100% renewable energy program that customers can select when getting their power from MCE. It costs only a penny more per killowatt hour, averaging about an extra $5 a month. “The best part is that half of the premium they paid for that 100% renewable energy is reserved in a local renewable development fun,” said DiGiorgio. “That fund is going to be used to help support this project.” So local residents are not only helping to build this solar panel field, they’ve also been contributing funds toward it all this time. A renewable energy resource being built on an otherwise useless landscape that is creating jobs for the local residents who helped fund the whole project?
