Pinole Through Time “Pinole Through Time,” the second book about the history of Pinole to be written by the Pinole Historical Society, is in the hands of publisher Fonthill Media (www. fonthillmedia.com/), which specializes in publishing books on general, local, and regional history. An addition to Fonthill’s “America Through Time” series, “Pinole Through Time” will feature 91 sets of photos of old Pinole buildings and landmarks and current photos of what exists on those sites today. In several cases these will be the same buildings, some restored and others nearly identical. Many of these photos have not been published before. Including inset photos, the book will have 192 photos. by Jeff Rubin The Pinole Historical Society expects the book will be delivered in mid to late September. A book signing in the Bank of Pinole building will be scheduled as soon as a firm delivery date is established. The book signing will be held in a conjunction with a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Bank of Pinole, which opened in 1915. The first book published by the Pinole Historical Society, “Images of America: Pinole,” released in 2009 through Arcadia Publishing, has sold more than 2,000 copies, 798 by the PHS alone. The book is available from the society (www.pinolehistoricalsociety. org) and at the PHS booth at the Pinole Farmers’ Market. DOWNER MANSION: Edward M. Downer, one of the most influential and prominent business figures in the history of Pinole and its surrounding communities, built his home at 2711 San Pablo Avenue in 1900. He was Pinole’s first official postmaster, was transfer agent and telegrapher of the Southern Pacific’s Pinole depot, and co-publisher of the Pinole Weekly Times, the town’s first newspaper. He was city clerk when Pinole incorporated in 1903. He was elected to the city council in 1910, and was mayor from 1913 until his death in 1938. He founded the Bank of Pinole in 1905.
