Contra Costa Marketplace - March 2016

Deb’s Dialog Editor’s Notes 2016 Easter Sunrise Service Join Us in our Serenity Mausoleum on Easter Sunday, March 27th, 7:00am. March 2016 MARKETPLACEcontracosta.com 7 While looking through page proofs of this month’s issue I was struck by two pieces that bring much the same message. The Hercules Education Foundation, featured on page 22, enters its seventh year supporting Hercules students and teachers, with funds and volunteer energy that make a big difference in the quality of local education. On page 60 you’ll find snapshots of the West Contra Costa Salesian Boys & Girls Club annual Bagna Cauda dinner. This Deborah ludlow Stevens event is all play and no work for those who come to eat, socialize and donate. But behind the scenes (and not so behind the scenes!) it takes dozens of hardworking volunteers to make it happen, to the benefit of hundreds of local youth. The message is that West County is full of opportunities to help others, while making friends and building community. Thank you to those involved, with encouragement to all our readers to roll up your sleeves and join them. Deborah March means spring, and spring means it’s time again for our annual Hercules Spotlight section. Thank you to Sylvia Villa-Serrano and the Hercules Chamber of Commerce, and to the Hercules businesses supporting this year’s Spotlight. It begins on page 18. Although I spend a lot of time in Hercules throughout the year, working on this section gives me a wider view of Hercules than I normally get. I am reminded each spring what an John Strohmeier attractive community Hercules is, set alongside a very pretty stretch of San Pablo Bay. Businesses along Railroad Avenue, which marks the Hercules shoreline, came together to promote their neighborhood on page 21 of this issue. Here you’ll find great places for lunch, brunch or dinner, some retail shopping, and well established professional services. Railroad Avenue is also a starting point for peaceful walks along the bayshore. If you have a dog, bring him or her along to share the view! Thank you to our readers and advertisers.
