Celebrate Hercules, Celebrate the 4th A run, walk, parade, festival and more Back on July 4, 2009, the City of Hercules had its annual parade and fireworks as it had done for many years. Shortly thereafter, the news broke that the city was in serious financial trouble. The 4th of July activities along with many other activities that the City had put on, had come to a halt. Luckily in January of 2014 the Rotary Club of Hercules approached the City about having a 5K run and one thing led to another and before long there was a plan for a 5k run, 1 mile walk/ run, a traditional 4th of July parade and a festival in the park, featuring food, music, vendors and activities for children. The 4th of July Festival was born! The theme for the day was “Celebrate Hercules” with the purpose of sharing all the positive parts of what the city had. Last year the race had over 400 runners, with ¾ running the 5k. The parade had over 60 entries and 45 vendors in the park. The estimated attendance of the combined event was approximately 5,000 people. The By Bill Shea attendees were having so much fun afterwards, that many stayed around after the event officially ended at 2pm and spent additional time in the City of Hercules. The Rotary Club of Hercules and the Celebrate Hercules 4th of July Committee are putting the final touches on the 2015 Celebration. This year, an additional race has been slated for children to run, ages 3-8 years old. Registration for the race and information for the festivities can be found at hercules4thofjuly.com. The Rotary Club of Hercules is a very small club and therefore would like to reach out to other community groups to ask for their assistance in the event. With very little money, but a lot of determination, the organization is also accepting donations to help organize this community event. If you wish to donate or volunteer, please contact Rotary Club of Hercules, PO Box 5605, Hercules, CA 94547 or call 510-851-0384. Happy 4th of July!
