First, of course, is the winter rain, which it seems like we haven’t seen for years. It’s a mixed blessing with snarled traffic and floods here and there, but I will take what comes with it. My winter garden is flourishing. Nearby seasonal waterfalls make for beautiful weekend walks, and I can be a little more relaxed about household water use. (Just a little!) As the economy improves, I think we will see progress this year on important projects in Hercules, Pinole and Richmond. As I’ve mentioned before, there is a wave of good new places to eat, drink and socialize as we await their completion. Melinda Myers’ short piece on page 56 can get you started on the way to more interesting and healthy winter meals, but for me the main appeal is the planning, planting and day-to-day tending of edible plants. It’s easy to forget, as you commute down Interstate-80 every day, that we live alongside one of the world’s most beautiful bodies of water, with winds sufficient to attract World Cup sailing competitions.
