Make 2015 the year to preserve your Debbie Ojeda, Owner ojedahouse@comcast.net february 2015 MARKETPLACEcontrac osta .com 7 If you’ve been reading our letters for a while, you know that here at Marketplace we are big on “shopping local.” That’s probably not surprising since almost all of our advertisers are locallyowned businesses. They are our friends and partners. But I recently came across some numbers that indicate how much shopping local benefits everyone in the community, not just business owners. Studies show that out of every dollar we Deborah ludlow Stevens spend at a big chain store, only about 15% stays in the community, the rest leaves town. On the other hand every time we spend a dollar at a locally-owned business, 45% or more stays close to home, and is recirculated locally to support not only business owners, but also their employees, their local suppliers, and our public services. Every dollar spent locally is an investment in our neighborhood. It makes a difference! Wishing you all a Happy Valentine’s Day, and a prosperous 2015. Not quite a year ago, the Llorente family opened Good Butter Bakery in Old Town Pinole, combining a dream with hard work to create a unique type of bakery. Their story is told beginning on page 32, and we wish them a lot of success. Also featured in this issue is Cohn-Stone glassblowing studio in Richmond. Cohn-Stone produces some of the most beautiful glass objects you will ever see, which are sold at fine boutiques throughout the country, online, and at sales they host periodically at their gallery/ studio.
