THE EL CERRITO GARDEN CLUB By Bonnie MacKenzie One of the goals of garden clubs is to bring people together who share common interests so that they can take advantage of the group’s energy and inspiration. Thus in the 60 years that the El Cerrito Garden Club has been in existence, it’s mission has included home and community gardening, protecting native plants, and a broadening array of environmental concerns. 22 MARKETPLACECONTRACOSTA.COM DECEMBER 2016 Presentations at monthly meetings have included how to attract beneficial insects, growing California native plants, floral design, rare fruit trees, and gardening without physical strain. The annual “Bouquets to Art” program features members’ floral arrangements along with works of art of their own choosing that reflect and complement their arrangements. And to conclude each year’s programs, in May the club has a tour of members’ gardens. Only half the members of the El Cerrito Garden Club live in El Cerrito. The other members live in Berkeley, Richmond, Kensington, Albany, San Pablo, or Pinole. One attraction for members and visitors alike is the plants for sale at each meeting. The plants are grown from cuttings from members’ gardens, planted from seed, or divided from expanding clumps of flowering plants. Refreshments, most of which are homemade, are also served at each meeting.
