BEARCLAW BAKERY: Breakfast & Brunch Restaurant · Deli · Sandwich Shop Nestled in the heart of Old Town Pinole on San Pablo Avenue is a small business that has prevailed for over 30 years by responding to ever-changing trends and customer demands. BearClaw Bakery, family owned and operated, and with roots in West County tracing back to the early 1900’s, once sold only freshly made pastries, baked goods, and coffee to their customers. But over the years, their menu has gradually expanded to include a robust menu of breakfast and lunch items, all of which are freshly-made on site every day. Long-time customers still find the pastries and doughnuts that they’ve come to love at BearClaw Bakery over the years, but also may select from savory items including meat and cheese croissants, made to order sandwiches and hot Panini’s, as well as fresh salads, fruit cups, and seasonal soups. Pre-made items are also available, perfect for those who want quick “grab and go” options to take to work, or for Saturday afternoon outings. 34 MARKETPLACEcontrac osta .com august 2015 Bear Claw Bakery was opened at its present Pinole location in 1982 by owners Mike Stott and his wife, Terri Hoeffer-Stott. However, a predecessor family bakery originated in 1912 started by Terri’s grandfather, turn of the century German emigrant, Albert Hoeffer. It was located on MacDonald Avenue in Richmond and was named “Popular Bakery and Restaurant.” Albert learned the baking trade soon after he emigrated here, and became a charter member of the San Francisco Bakery Workers Union, Local 24. He worked as a Master Baker for many years in San Mateo before eventually starting his own business. Albert and his oldest son, Ben (Terri’s father), ran the Richmond business together until Albert died in 1962. Ben continued to run the bakery/restaurant until it closed in 1975, assisted by Terri, who began working alongside her father at age 14. After Terri’s marriage to Mike, the couple decided to resurrect the family bakery business, even though Mike, then a chemical engineer for Bio-Rad, had never baked a day in his life!
