To show kids that what he will teach them has real world application, Margolis said he shows a few videos to start each class. “One of the videos that really excites the kids is the landing of Curiosity in 2012. It is a combination of real footage and animation” he said. “At the very end it shows everyone from Cal Tech being excited because they were able to do something. I freeze frame it there and I tell the kids those people are the scientist who put a robot on Mars and when the kids graduate those people will be retiring and they could have their jobs.” Whether or not a student wants to become a scientist or engineer after taking one of his classes, Margolis is confident that these classes have a tremendous impact on the kids’ lives. Of course, he said, “After the workshops finished and they see me in the hallway, they say ‘Hi Lego man.’ I respond with, ‘Are you an engineer or scientist or both?’ Many yell out one or the other. They now know another possibility for their future.” For more information on this program go to: westcountylegorobotics.com or call 408-309-0499.
