Contra Costa Marketplace - April 2017

Blume House can be a trip down memory lane for certain guests. Some of the exclamations people say upon entering include: “Wow, I still have one of those in my house!” or “I remember my grandmother having one of these!” And then, heading over to the Alvarado Adobe, visitors from Central America have stated how the adobe is so wonderfully built that bullets can’t go through it—she’s actually heard that on several occasions. Currently open on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, the San Pablo Historical and Museum Society is short of docents and in need of volunteers. In fact, if you could offer some of your time or know someone who’d like to get involved, Pottier invites you to send her an email directly at sanpablomuseums@gmail.com. They also do tours anytime for groups like the boy scouts and girl scouts, local senior centers and so on. In addition to the furnished homes, you’ll find many photographs of how things used to be right here where we live! “We have extensive archives of the whole West County Area,” said Pottier. “San Pablo had a bullfighting ring, greyhound racing, even had an airport at one point!” You’ll also find photos of when the Blume House was being brought down from the hill by the Hilltop Mall. With free admission, you might as well come pay them a visit. Call them at (510) 215-0000 or head to sanpablomuseums.org.
