“We love that it incorporates both genders, as well as a wide age range,” she said. “Older youth, like Aubrey, serve as mentors to the younger kids. The mixed ages is a benefit to both the younger and older members.” As 4-H is led by the kids, said Komaromi, “It’s amazing to see what the youth are capable of.” She recently chaperoned at 4-H camp in Las Posadas State Forest in Napa. “The camp was entirely run by the youth,” she said. “Yes, there were adults there making sure everything was done, but it was awesome to see the capabilities of the youth. It was a blast and further sold me on the benefits of 4-H.” Stacy credits much of her development as an individual to her 8 years with 4-H. “I started baking through 4-H at age 10. By age 14 I had honed my craft enough to become a state-fair baking champion. Now, at 17, I am giving back my skill teaching 28 kids the secrets that can one day make them champions too,” she adds. “Considering that I started as a shy, stuttering girl, I think that speaks volumes for what 4-H has to offer youth—It’s made me a champion baker, a commanding public speaker and an innovative leader.” Enrollment for 4-H is from September-November, but you can still volunteer or pay them a visit with your child to try and get them interested. For more information you can email them at wildcat@ contracosta4h.org. Maybe 4-H will be the perfect match for your child! It’s done wonders for Aubrey Stacy who stands by her convictions that 4-H clubs are among the best of the best.
